About Steve Ramsey

Based in Des Moines, Iowa, bass trombonist/composer/arranger Steve Ramsey has enjoyed a variety of performance opportunities across the United States and in Scandinavia. Ramsey was selected as a co-winner in 2015 of both the Drake University Honors Recital competition and concerto competition and participated in recording projects with the Drake Wind Symphony on their 2017 album Confluences and with Drake Jazz I on their 2017 album China Bound. He has also been commissioned to write low brass music for he University of Louisiana-Lafayette and Luther College.
Ramsey currently works as a job coach in a special ed program with Des Moines Public Schools. He also plays cello, electric bass, and sings with RAMPD Pro Verified member Torina Gedler on her music project Dea ex Machina.
Ramsey is an active member of Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia music fraternity, currently serving as Alumni Relations Officer for the Alpha Beta chapter at Drake University and as member-at-large for the Central Iowa Area Alumni Association. He has also been a regular member or substitute trombonist with numerous ensembles in northeast and central Iowa, and sings bass with choirs and small ensemble projects in Des Moines.
His compositional influences include, in no particular order, J.S. Bach, Ludwig van Beethoven, Dmitri Shostakovich, Ola Gjeilo, Maurice Ravel, and Þorkell Sigurbjörnsson as well as bands such as Agent Fresco, Nordic Giants, and Emerson, Lake & Palmer.
Ramsey’s music has been performed by the choir at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church in Des Moines and by trombone choirs, mixed low brass ensembles, and/or other chamber ensembles at Penn State University, Luther College, Drake University, the University of Louisiana-Lafayette, and the Cleveland Trombone Seminar.
